Here's a question for you techno gurus; are gpx format files readable & useable in all GPS hand units? Have they superseded all other formats?

Yes and no...
Most (handheld) GPS receivers store internal data in a proprietary way which does not have much to do specific file formats.
Opening and closing GPX files usually depends on the sort of user software you choose, and what you want to do with it. Software supplied by a GPS manufacturer (such as Garmin's Mapsource) will be compatible with that manufacturer's equipment, only.
That said, there are many excellent third-party software packages which can read-and-write multiple file formats, AND communicate these to many different GPS units. One of these is GPS Utility.

Aaaarrrggghhhh! Not the sort of reply to calm my fevered brow! I know what you are saying however. Perhaps another way of asking would be - 'what percentage of GPS users today would be able to use a gpx file?

There's no way of estimating such a figure. If the GPS users are members of GC.com, then the percentage who have at least heard of GPX format might be quite high.
If, on the other hand, they are members of the 82nd Airborne Divn, it might be a lot lower.

I won't bother talking percentages, or any other techno babble, I'll just tell
you how I use GPX files. I use a program called GPXSonar on my PDA,
this allows me to view the GPX files as cache listings (just like you see the
cache listings on Geocaching.com). This comes in handy if (like me) you
don't like printing the cache listings out before you go caching, you can
simply view them in the field.
As for my GPS'r (a garmin venture), I just punch in the co-ords and
follow the arrow, I never bother with the very limited map it comes with.
I hope this helps. _________________ I am just going outside, and may be some time!
