Is there any way that I can import caches to cachemate without the larger caches being truncated?
At the moment, if I want to do a larger cache, such as a multi, I have to print it off and use paper for it. I would prefer to just have everything on the PDA, but I don't know how to stop it from being truncated.

For long multis, I actually hate hte scroll function on our PDA with Cachemate - it is never smooth and jumps around a lot. For long multis I've actually found that using an ipod for caching works better as you can smoothly and controllably scroll up and down using the wheel. Best of all, it doesn't seem to truncate. If you have an ipod (and GSAK), you can read about how to cache with an ipod here. |

Thanks, now my main problem is, how do I convince Mrs HH, who has just bought me a new PDA to cache with, that I now need an Ipod too?? _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

This is only a difficulty where the main description text is outrageously long.
There's no technical workround within Cachemate for this problem.
My only suggestion is that you might contact the cache owner(s) concerned and politely suggest that they should keep the included text (it's usually cut'n-pasted from a Wiki article) to a reasonable length.
I've tried this in Ireland and it doesn't work, but it might work in Scotland.

I haven't gotten around to using all these Geocaching specific programs. I just save the website onto my PDA -I get everything and it works fine. The only annoying thing is flipping between the page and Memory Map.
Luckily we have one each now! _________________ Now a happily married pair of cachers! |

I agree with what you are saying as far as regular caches are concerned, which doesn't really make a difference when you are on the ground, but for a lot of multi's it isn't really possible to cut it down. My cache Watt Trail for instance has 5 different trails. You only need to choose one of them to complete the cache, but with truncation you don't even get the complete first trail that is listed.
I may send an email to the maker of cachemate and ask if this problem can be looked at. With the memories of PDA's nowadays, I can't see why a cache has to be truncated? _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

I have a PPC and have both Cachemate and GPXSonar running. GPXSonar is slower but it's better for long cache descriptions and when you want to see more than 5 logs.
Not sure if you have a Palm or a PPC but GPXSonar doesn't run on the Palm. Maybe there's a similar alternative? _________________ No one is listening until you fart! |

<reads> Aye... see what you mean. That's a biggie, right enough. (4800+ words -Admin)
I think the restriction was originally due to the way that the Cachemate database (on Palm) was configured. There's no harm in approaching Smityware about it - either it can be fixed or it can't.

I'm afraid that FoF and I are guilty too: both "Faith, Hope and Tenacity" and "John Agnes and Robert" get the Cachemate chop!

Would the answer not be for cache owners to give vital information first and the long history afterwards? That way you have the essential details on CacheMate and can read the spiel on the computer at your leisure. And yes, Steve, I had one of yours truncated |

As a work around on the PALM you can always use Plucker for caches with long descriptions. This does not seem to truncate the description page.
Have a look at the Geocacher University article on paperless geocaching.
It is found at http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html |

My reply from Smittyware -
Quote: | If you have the "long description" option turned on during file
conversion, then you've got the descriptions as long as they'll go.
Because of the way that Palm OS does edit fields in a form, I have to set
some kind of upper limit. |
Never mind it was worth a try. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you
