A dumb thought. (I specialise in 'em.)

When I go caching, I take (now) a PDA with loads of information, a map and compass and a GPS that will take me within metres of the spot I want. (Or, if it's a Haggis Hunter cache, right down the hole.)

When I go hill-walking, I take a map and compass and very often, I will have previously read a guide book and looked lasciviously at Irvine Butterfield photographs (pornography for hill-walkers?). And of course, I have extra clothing, a bivvy bag, food....

When I go climbing (ice or rock) I carry a bag full of ropes and metal and rely entirely on a description of the walk-in and actual route on the crag in a climbing guide written in an elliptical and entirely personal style something like a crossword clue. I leave the rest of the stuff at home. Don't need more to carry!

And yet

When I'm caching, I can spend almost unlimited time searching and my biggest risk is going home without having found a Tupperware box.

When I'm hill-walking,my biggest risk is going off-route and taking longer than I planned - at worst spending a night out. And even I notice when I'm wandering off the edge of a mountain ridge (although one day I'll tell the story of how I climbed Ben Laoigh twice on a misty day....)

When I'm climbing, my biggest risk is being a couple of metres off when I hit the crag and starting up the wrong route and finding myself on something way outside my technical limits (one day I'll tell the story of how I had to jump into a tree to "complete" a VS that was actually an E4...)

shome mishtake here shurely? ed

Embarrassed Jack

Aww!! Thanks Jack, it must be all the reading of the perambulations of The Forester on how to get an accurate fix that has rubbed off on me? Wink
You see all that i do is actually go to the cache site about 20 times in a given month, and take copious waypointas, once at home i upload all of these waypoints onto my computer and try to take out the average, once realising that this is actual, all a load of total
BOLLOCKS!! I go back to the cache site, take a waypoint and walk away for about 50 metres and see how close it gets me to the cache. If it gets me within a metre after about 3 attempts, that is good enough for me, if not I start again.
