Sadly didn't have my camera while running this evening on Gullane Sands near Aberlady. (Shamelss plug for GCWGQ4!!)
Lots (I mean LOTS) of jellyfish washed up on the beach. Most just fading blobs of pale jelly, but several about 3 inches or so in diameter with deep blue sections in the core; several much bigger - probably originally over 2 feet in diameter (although rather dried out round the edges) with dark brown tulip shaped markings around the "clock face" and a mass of deep rose pink tentacles folded under the centre of the dome.
Any medusologists hazard a guess as to the types I saw?

Thanks, Angus! Looks like Blue Jellyfish and Lion's Mane Jellyfish.
I remember there's a late Sherlock Holmes story where the great man identifies a Lion's Mane as the killer in the mysterious death of a swimmer. But according to the leaflet you sent me to, the Lion's Mane sting is much less dangerous than Holmes suggested! It's about a serious as a wasp sting, apparently. _________________ In the service of a Queen |

looks like it will give you a nasty sting but you should live to tell the tale! see this site Now if it had been an Australian box jelly then keep clear as it has a lethal toxin more potent than cobra venom and will kill a person in minutes. Perhaps Mr Homes was confused from too much opiates at the time! _________________ www.BigWolf.co.uk |

Excellent pamphlet -Thanks BW
(Now when somebody comes out with that irritating expression "It's a no-brainer" I'll know that they are talking about a jellyfish!) _________________ Let's face the music and dance |

This thread made me remember 1:
http://www.mcsuk.org/turtles/turtles.php?title=jellyfish+survey
The Marine Conservation Society would like people to record strandings of jellyfish on ther local beaches. This is to help their research on leatherback turtle ecology in the UK. There are links on the above page to a downloadable report form and another jellyfish ID card! |
