Mrs J has been complaining for weeks that GC.com has been slow between 8am - 10am.
But today, it was like watching paint dry. Memories of 11k modems came flooding back. And a some points it just threw me a server error.
It's been like this all day (26/3/06), I just gave up with it.
The rest of my traffic has been fine all day.
Any know what's up with it?

It tends to be like that on a Sunday - everyone across the world is on g.com logging their weekend adventures and the server cannot cope with it (despite being upgraded not that long ago). _________________ Utterly smitten by a Captain

Welcome to the reality of weekend Geocaching, and the merits of waiting until Monday to make your logs. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

There's an ongoing discussion about this on the GC.com forums, HERE, with contributions from Jeremy himself.
Some of the discussion is even on-topic.
One interesting thing mentioned is the possibility of offline logging. However, this is really just moving the problem around, instead of solving it.
Since there doesn't seem to any end of the growth in geocaching in sight, this server overload is going to keep happening: they'll fix it, the site will be OK for a while, and then the load and numbers will get to another point where they are too great.

This is true Wlw, but you would think with the revenue that they must be making, they should be able to sort it out before it happens? _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

Jeremy Irish has said that it isn't about the money - and I believe him.
He's also said that moving away from Microsoft OS and SQL databases, to (say) Unix and a "proper" RDBMS, wouldn't help the situation.
This, I don't believe.
But that's easy for me to say. The difficulty for Groundspeak is that the in-house expertise they have available is all based round the current set-up. The fettle it and fiddle with it, and - eventually - they can get it to behave, sort of.
An ORACLE or PROGRESS database system on Unix would handle dozens - even hundreds - of transactions per second without breaking sweat. (I know this, because I used to design such systems for a living.)
The problem is that Groundspeak have no way of converting their current, very complex and bespoke system, onto such a platform. They just don't have the expertise to do it. Neither does anyone else, because there's only one geocaching.com web system.
So (for the time being) they, and we, are stuck with what there is.

I suppose you are right.
For the first time that I have experienced it, it has now spilled over to a Monday, as I am getting a server to busy error. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

Well I know about one of them - Glenlatterach - because I use Insta - Notify for new traditional caches within 50 miles. So I received an email with that one in it. But as for the other one?
But I don't have a zillion of these set up for each type of cache - wouldn't it be better if you could set Insta Notify for any type of cache in one query!!?? |

Thanks for the info folks. Let's hope Jeremy & Co can get things moving in
the right direction.
Or maybe we'll just let WW pester him into submission

Its down again but on the good side I don't have to post my DNF yet
Went out to Threipmuir Shore, but after a good hour walking up and down could not find it. It made me feel a bit better when I bumped into another 2 cachers who also could not find it......
Mind you the water was very high, would this make it a bit harder to find?? |
