I have written a guide to the installation and use of the Scottish Mountaineering Club's "Contour Mapping" data for Garmin GPS.
This is the first draft of same, and any comments, spelling corrections, busted links, etc, would be more than welcome.
The draft can be viewed HERE

It looks good, some useful instructions for installing the maps.
Just to point out the links in the Contents section doesn't work. They all have an extra ".\" in front of them. |

One thing that would be useful would be to include a print friendly icon and display all the text and graphics on a single page so that I could print out the whole article without the contents footer thus saving 4 pages of wasted paper. (the down side is that if you make any changes you need to do it in 2 places)
Alternatively you could include a PDF file with all the pages in it.
Looks great and currently downloading the maps! |

Good idea. I can do a print formatted version (with correct page breaks) once the draft settles down. Dave Storey has sent in a few suggestions/corrections which will be incorporated this weekend.

You know, I knew it was a big mistake putting my only copy of mapsource up for raffle at the Ratho event. I thought memory map would have done me just fine, (which it does what I want). Now I wish I still had the mapsource as well. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

Just reading the NEW installation guide for the maps and it says unzip them to.....
C:\Program Files\Garmin\contours
BUT
My mapsource program is located in C:\Garmin
Will this cause any problems.....as i'm not a techie

Just to expand on this point a little...
Garmin's mapping products are not consistent about their install locations. For example: the default location for EuroCS6 was c:\GARMIN, whereas the upgrade for the same package to v7 installed to c:\program Files\Garmin
If the new guide is followed, these differences are not an issue. Your installation folder will match the registry entries correctly, and it will all work - regardless of where any Mapsource products live.

Loaded all the maps on to Map Source the other night... followed the instructions and... BEAUTIFULL no problems what so ever. Only tonight did I get chance to upload them to the GPS. Impressed.. shall use the trig points mainly whilst closer to home BUT the contours will be great when in the lakes (not literally) and Cornwall etc.
Thanks

Hi - just wanted to say thanks for all the help this forum and the associated websites has given me - I've installed the SMC data on my Garmin GPSMAP 60C and it's really useful. I have a page on my website with my experiences of choosing a GPS receiver and installing data on it (with pics of the SMC data on the receiver display) at:

I have a Garmin GPSmap 96c which I use for light aviation. However, I also want to use it for hill walking and came across your site by accident. Downloaded the maps at the weekend (took ages - no broadband) and sent them to the GPS and am truly astounded by the results!
I had been on to Garmin previously about the likelyhood of a TOPO map for the UK but they were non-committal. Dont think I would bother with it now.
I am also surprised how poor the coastline is on the base map. The zero contour (from the SMC data) on the west coast here seems dead on (very impressed) but some seal lochs and offshore islands on the base map don't coincide with the zero contour at all.
Just one question:
Is the patch 1.1 zip file (mentioned on the SMC page) still used? I cant find it! |

This patch is no longer needed, as a new version of the data (incorporating the patched items) was made available last month.
Regarding your other points, there are persistent rumours about a "Topo GB" product from Garmin and something like it was mentioned on their web site for a few days earlier this month (Dec).
These mentions have now vanished, so perhaps we shouldn't hold any breaths.
Anyway, the SMC/Storey contours are free - whereas you just KNOW that if a Garmin "Topo GB" does come out, it's gonna cost about 120 quid...
