IE is well known for having BHO (Browser Helper Objects) and ActiveX controls attached to webpages / downloads and may have viruses / spyware or other malware attached to them that monitor what you are up to and send somebody the info. This could cause your PC to crash or act strangely. These BHO's get around firewalls and antivirus software - surprisingly easily in some cases.
Firefox and Thunderbird are not so susceptible to these attachments.
More or less.

Ok thanks. So the benefits are not obvious during use, as it were, but may prevent a calamity.

There is an obvious benefit when you use the browser. It's easier to use, especially with 'tabs' so you can see what's going on in 3-4 sites easily without major juggling of windows. It looks better from day one.
You can change the appearance of the 'skin' to many different ones. Even a leopard skin and white leather design for added 'Bling!!
I use a couple of very narrow ones to get the biggest 'page' in the screen on my laptop.

Compared to Outlook Express, an obvious advantage of Thunderbird (same people) is the ease of use, especially with different mail accounts and if left open, when an e-mail arrives at the server it tells you you have mail downloaded. You don't have to continually go and see if there's any sent.

Oh, Bill Gates doesn't market them. Is that possibly seen as an advantage? Twisted Evil

It looks as normal to me using Firefox.

(Usual horrendous ads etc, Ho ho. ) Wink

- I don't see that it should cause probs. A lot of interactive sites have problems with the way aol works but for example, if you used my laptop or say, were at Highland Nick's place log onto aol and input username + password. After that it should be business as usual.
The big ISP's just generally use a tailored browser so that it comes with all their stuff preloaded in there. Virgin, Tiscali etc do likewise. It's like the tailored shopping experience at Tesco, Sainsbury's etc. Your loyalty card tells them what you buy and they send you customised offers. If you buy lots of wine and chicken in Tesco, you ain't gonna get money off vouchers for wine and chicken are you?

They don't want you being in control. Gawd forbid you load a 'blank' browser and decide to have GeoX or a blank as homepage! Dear Oh!

Then there's all the tracking stuff they load in your pc so they know where you go...

Paranoid? Me?

Oh, if you are installing Firefox - as you go through that process it gives you the option of transferring all your bookmarked sites. You know, eBay, geofreeze, etc. so you won't lose them or have a long manual process to do.

Hmmm. Didn't see that one.

Any way of moving them over post-intallation? Question

Edit:
Helps if I think before I type. Here's how:

Bookmarks - Manage Bookmarks - File - Import - Microsoft Internet Explorer

Jobs a good 'un! Very Happy

I picked up this thread on Groundspeak. Looks interesting, but how do you add these scripts?

SCRIPTS

To install, right-click on the installer icon, and select "Install User Script". If you do not see the menu option, click on the icon to open the file in a new tab (or window), and select "Install This User Script" from the Tools menu.

I use a few of these scripts, developed by LordElph and others, such as the logs total display, the replacement of the non descript GC map with an OS one plus a few others. They are (mostly) excellent. If you don't like them, then just uninstall.

Geocaching Forums Tools Greasemonkey Script http://files.dixo.net/geocachingforumtools.user.js
Geocaching OS Map Linker Greasemonkey Script
http://files.dixo.net/GeocachingMapLinker.user.js

These have a slightly different install procedure thgough - follow the Greasemonky pop up instructions. (You will need Greasemonkey first though.) Do you have this??
