I'm not sure if I should be worried about this, but...

We're off to Orkney on holiday soon. I had resigned myself to only getting a couple of caches as there were only about 10 across Orkney Mainland + the neighbouring islands. However, I checked my PQ again this week and much to my surprise the place is now stuffed with caches Surprised

It looks like about 40 new caches have been placed in the last couple of weeks, which in itself is good but there's a few catches:

Sad they're all 35mm micros
Question they've all been listed under the same GC account
Shocked that account has been a member for one month and has no finds listed

Am I worrying about nothing and should just embrace this as a potential FTF-fest? Or is this going to be a nightmare of inaccurate co-ords, dubious hiding places, micros in the woods etc?

Do you think he/she is an experienced cacher posting under a different name for some event (as yet to be announced)? Confused

It seems rather strange that someone's gone around hiding without knowing how it works (i.e., by accumulating a bit of experience first), although the great number of micros doesn't appear to bode well.

I was in Aberdeen on Friday trying to find a decent-sized cache in which to launch a TB and it was a blooming nightmare! Very few candidates and so many 35 mm containers that they must have a lot of very dedicated film photographers...

First post, be gentle...

I'm doing the same as dunk090 - holiday on Orkney, looking at the caches - and was also rather startled by the ever-increasing number over the last couple of months.

However, some of them do seem to be found and not causing any bother, so I'm more concerned about tracking down the two hiding off on Sanday - you can either get s stupidly early ferry or fly in to do a lot of walking (probably about eight-or-nine miles across some pretty flat, dull roads).

And, of course, the challenge of how to fit 77 (+2?) caches into a six-day holiday...

Welcome!
If they're getting found without much problem then it looks like I am worrying about nothing Smile
I'd discounted the Sanday caches for this trip - it's our first time up there and would need a good excuse to drag (non-caching) Mrs.dunk090 to Sanday other than grabbing those two Rolling Eyes
I am thinking that Shapinsay might be good for my first earthcache hide... if only to put a cache on the island Twisted Evil

Earthcaches are no longer as easy to submit as they once were. Regardless of how publicly accessible the site is, you must still have permission from the landowner/manager to get the listing approved.

I did investigate, and the only ferry is stupidly early. The inter-island plane looks like fun, and there is a cycle hire place about a mile from the airport, but I'd be dragging my other half as well (who doesn't mind the caching, but is expecting baby guybles in November, so isn't keen on too much exercise).

When are you off there? I'd be interested in getting your feedback on the caches afer the holiday (I'm over at the beginning of August).

Ok back now from what was a good holiday Smile

I found 15 caches during the week we were away. One virtual, one regular and 13 micros! The virtual was a great location (Brough of Birsay - check the tide times with the visitor centre), the regular (An Orkney View) was interesting location and necessary to drop all the TBs & coins I'd brought with me Rolling Eyes

Most of the micros were in good locations, i.e. near a historical location or at a great viewpoint. Couple felt like they were there for the numbers. Quite a common theme to how they were hidden and more than one definitely had scope to hide something larger.

I guess the validity of so many micros depends on what caching is about. If it takes me to a great spot then that should be compensation enough?

Oh, did I mention I was FTF on 5 of the caches Cool

Thanks for the update - I'll look forward to dragging myself around the place.

Five FTFs, huh? If past form is anything to go by, there will be five brand-new caches by the end of next week (in fact, I notice a new one pop up today, a medium-sized L&L in the middle of Kirkwall - hope my new geocoin arrives in time).

That said, if I can't get the FTFs, I'll just just go for covering Orkney with little smiley faces...

Bah! Only managed 58 of the 91 Orkney caches. And only two of those were FTFs.

Still, there were some nicely chosen locations and it was a great way of exploring the place, even if you did start to enter into a certain amount of "oh, look, a 35mm film canister" ennui.

Dropped a note to groatiebuckies afterwards, and they mentioned they have plans to scatter another 50 caches across the mainland, plus a set of nano caches in Kirkwall (potentially linked to a multi). I look forward to heading back over someday.
