1:10,000 data free today.... although the website is down!!

Will be very useful for geocaching Very Happy but probably for desktop planning rather than uploading to devices... will be a lot of data to carry around.

I appreciate that the site is down just now but when you can can you supply a linky please?

Is the data only available today or is it permanent?

One last thought, this isn't an April Fool is it?

Sorry will put a linky when the site comes back up, too many excited mappers....

The data is available following a government announcement in the last week or so, and a 3 month consultation after an announcement last year.... so no, not an April Fool I don't reckon!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/apr/01/ordnance-survey-maps-download-free

Once it is there, I can try and write a couple of notes on using it on your PC in a GIS package if that is of any interest.

EDIT: Page with Open Data here http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/products/index.html
I think Street View is the 1:10,000 they are releasing...

OK Part 1 - How to add Raster Data into a GIS Programme

1. You need GIS software to use the data… if you don’t have any, try QGIS.
http://www.qgis.org/en/download/current-software.html

2. Choose you products from https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/opendatadownload/products.html

I went for 1:250,000 – road atlas scale, Street View (detailed) and Land form Profile (contours). You will need to get the street view in small tiles, or order a CD. I chose the tiles around where I live.

3. You will get a link emailed to download the data. Extract everything from the zip files. Start with the 1:250k data.

4. In the folder called “data”, move all the files from /georeferencing/tfw into the main “data” folder, so that the TIFs and TFWs are in the same folder.

5. In QGIS, choose Layer – Add Raster Layer. Browse to the folder with the data, make sure data type shows “geotiff” to see your files. Select and add all of the TIF files.

6. You should now see the files in the left hand “Layers” window. If you right click on this space, you can choose “new group” then drag all of your layers into that group to keep things tidy.

7. Repeat above for each of the Street View folders, placing all the layers in another group

Next part will be Contours & Vector data.....

Thanks for the heads up!

Those of you who have a Memory Map version that can import maps can import the OS Street View maps directly:

* copy the *.tab files and the *.tif files into one directory
* in Memory map do map/map list/refresh map list/add folder
* select the directory and tick "Load all maps now" and sit back and wait

now you have dozens of small files which you may want to combine:

* in Memory map do map/map list select all the tiles and select merge
* don't bother with the anti alias

You will find the resulting maps in your memory map install directory in the qct folder. Delete all the tiffs and the qcts for the individual tiles and you will be left with a single gct file which you can copy to a location of your choice.

I did the NT segment around edinburgh and it came out at 540Mb. In my opinion google maps look nicer. But the OS Maps should be more up to date?

you probably want the most recent windows stand alone, but if you are happy with memory map use roberts instructions! Google is fine but I am more interested in looking at how to integrate the contours, need to work on this.

As for currency not sure if the open data will have the same update schedule as commercial, but currency vs google not sure.

Thanks for all the info above.. I think I almost understand it..

Saying that, I have only JUST figured out how to load geocaches as POI on my TomTom Very Happy

(I set it up to alert me when I was in 1000yard proximity, but that gets annoying very quickly.. especially when I am driving through work as I can't really stop (much))

Does anyone here use a Mac?

If I remember right, you can't buy MM for Mac platforms Sad
