This is my first foray into GeoX so here goes. Thanks to 'Jack Aubrey' for letting me know about the forum.

On the last day of our hols yesterday in Portugal I finally found my first overseas cache!!!! Laughing Cool

Earlier in the week my whole family had threatened to disown/divorce/disembowel Shocked me following 4 aborted attempts on other caches.

In Tenerife I had similar problems and dragged the family around and around on very long, very hot walks with absolutely nothing to show for their troubles! Embarassed

How have others fared on their travels?

(by the way - we are not going abroad for a year now so all suggestions will be stored for use in 2009 and beyond)

I get away with it a bit easier going on holiday in the UK, but when we went to Tunisia I didn't have any luck as the caches were to far to walk in the heat and Mrs HH quite understandably didn't want to be left alone while I ventured off.

P.S. Welcome to the forum. Very Happy

We had a bit of trouble in Japan to start with- I think half our problem was that we were very cautious poking around and looking in a strange country, where you're not sure what might happen if you were spotted by the authorities!

(virtuals were easy enough though!!)

I get dragged to Tenerife once or twice a year, I usually look on google earth for caches. I make note of those that I think i can do, I down load the cache page and transfer the details to a local map after studying Google Earth.I only pick those with English translation. Does that help Question

I think the local map is definitely the answer. I tried to find a couple of caches in Tenerife without a map earlier this year and ended up trekking what seemed like miles with no success. This was due to a large, gated holiday complex blocking all obvious routes to the marked cache just a few hundred yards away. Mrs SaA and the kids weren't very happy! Argue2

We even stood literally two feet from one cache and didn't realise where it was hidden until back in Scotland. Embarassed

I am still learning!

I have a map with a companion book which I purchased in Tenerife. The book and map are produced in the UK. Google "Tenerife Hiking Map". I just did it's available from Amazon and Map Stop. the map is GPS ready what ever that means.
