I am now looking for someone who is willing for me to tag along so that I can do this cache. I don't own any of the fancy equipment that it requires  and I would love to do it 
It's a pity as I would have had a chance of a FTF as well.

The news got out very quickly. 
I didn't expect that anyone would have a whereigo notification for Scotland?
It took me a long time to get this ready, much longer than I had anticipated. So I hope it was worth the effort and you will enjoy the game. Now I am really looking forward to the logs...

Hmm interesting - I'll not be put off by the rather random Whereigo experience at Harrogate!
Does anyone know if I can Whereigo with my Nokia N82 phone????

Not unless it's a PocketPC type device...
I had not looked into the whole Wherigo thing until seeing this thread and have downloaded the Pocket PC player onto my Atom V. Not had the chance to get outside yet to see if it works though but the program seems to be running OK. If it works I'll give some of the locationless cartridges a try first.
It looks like fun. |

Better than the one in Harrogate?
Luckily Jack has the right gizmo so we just have to work out how to use the software. There is one in Prague we hope to try soon, too, which even has an English version.

I enjoyed it more than the one in Harrogate. To me Harrogate's was like a posh multi, you got to the co-ords answered the question and it took you to the next set of co-ords. There was only one twist in it that I could see.
This one, well I can't say too much, but it's not a multi I can tell you!

It wasn't quite as easy as FoF hoped. Downloaded the player but found that my version of Windows Mobile wasn't compatible with it. When I'd found the patch I needed (there was some useful help on the Wherigo forum) and downloaded that, I found that it messed up the operation of Memory Map. Ho Hum!
As everyone rightly says the wee directional arrow that takes you between locations is at best pretty approximate and tends to jig around a lot. I also made a mistake in where I put new cartridges at first. (When you install the player it sets up a folder for cartridges in the My Documents directory of Windows mobile, which I didn't think was the most obvious location. You can change the directory structure from the settings tab on the player though if you want.) Otherwise it all seemed to work ok once installed and the OS patch was in place.
Well, I've done the tutorial and we're all set for a visit to Harrison Park tomorrow for the real - or raher fantasy - thing!

The experience is recorded in our logs. I suggest you discount a bit of the grumbling about installing and not being able to find locations in my log and previous post. At least part of the grumbling is due to me being a bit under the weather! And I can report that in the course of the afternoon I was able to get both Wherigo AND memory map to recognise the GPS signal on my Mio. So don't be put off!
Robert has done a cracking job. The adventure he's worked out is fun in its own right and - unless you happen on an absolutely perfect sequence of events by accident - you get to have a good walk even although Harrison Park is not a large area. And while - because of the setting - you finally get led to a micro, the bonus cache more than makes up for that!
We found that the key bit of advice is how you approach a location. Because GPS enabled Pocket PCs are optimised for sat-nav applications, the chip sets deliberately ignore refresh information based on small increments and slow speed. So walk briskly and with purpse as you approach a location. Robert has made the zones sufficeintly deep and wide that you are unlikely to walk through them without getting a firm "here" signal (unless, paradoxically, you slow down!).
Get out there and try it!

The Black Isler, Haylin and myself did this cache a few days ago, accompanied by Haggis Hunter who was there for the laugh. And he got a few of those.
We were beset with technical problems (not those mentioned by JA however) but had a good time. Allow at least two hours.......
Grateful thanks to Roolku for something that must have taken hours to "dream" up. |

I have found a recent thread on the groundspeak forums about an open source wherigo player written in java. There is a good chance that this will work with your phone. Also the guy seems very helpful trying to sort out issues with particular phones.

I tried it this morning on "The Lost World". Seemed to run ok until I had to drop six items. When I dropped them, it didn't seem to delete them from the list I could select from, even though they were moving from my inventory, so I couldn't actually complete that task oh well, maybe another time!
