Picked up a tick whilst caching in Aviemore. Not the best experience, but hopefully all OK. Think as other posters - time to buy a "tick remover".

Where I live ticks are very common. My dog is rarely without ticks all summer. I don't remove them as, if you break off the head part the site will probably become infected. My dog is a black and white collie and spotting the ticks before they attach is almost impossible however I have had light coloured dogs in the past and a lot of their ticks could be seen and removed before they became attached. I usually wear wellies when out in my own area and very rarely get any ticks. If I find one then I remove it immediately using a pair of tweesers or just my nails if tweesers are not about. I usually apply some spirits to the area but whether that does any good I don't know. I have never suffered from Lyme disease. Wear all your clothes "tucked in" so that the tick can not find any skin and don't be stupid and wear shorts!
