While out hiding a couple of new caches (which I can't submit because gc.com is still down!) I saw these.
They are jelly like blobs and they were at the edge of freshwater pools.
What are they?[/img] |

They look like the jelly that frog spawn appears in - but there is no spawn in those and it's the wrong time of year surely? _________________ Utterly smitten by a Captain

That's what it reminded me of too. Although this was out of the water. |

The last time I saw something like this, was on the golf course...*
Clear or coloured gelatinous clumps and patches are formed by myxomycete slime moulds. The moulds are usually small, like an amoeba but they can aggregate together, and are often a substantial nuisance to gardeners (and greenkeepers) at this time of year.
It needs very damp conditions for this to happen - and we've had those, recently. Golf courses suffer in late summer, if the sprinkler systems are over-used.

(* Of course, it could also be another Twigger spoof, and nothing to do with fungi.) |

Are you any relation to the "Haggis Hunter" who recently lectured the GC.com forums about jokes in poor taste?
No... I knew that had to be somebody else.

I am that very Haggis Hunter, which is why I put the footnote, as this has been a joke about her since the 80's when she was in Neighbours, not one that I made up because she has got cancer. Unlike the jokes which you have quoted which were made purely because Ronnie Barker had died (I personaly believe there is a difference).
However I take your point and apologise for causing any offence. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

None taken, and apologies aren't necessary.

Found the same substance on Deuchary Hill this week, both in individual clumps as per photo and also in a huge sludge mass on the surface of the stream. |

OK - something to look out for is a bluish tinge to the jelly, or even blue or purple spots here and there on it. These show the presence of cyanobacteria, which are associated with the mould under favourable conditions.
It's a jungle out there...

I have seen these blobs quite often around a pond next to my garden and on the bank of the Thurso river on my kayaking trips, I always blamed the frogs, I did wonder why I saw it at strange times of the year. My garden normally gets invaded by frogs every year to eat all the slugs. Now I know it is nothing to do with the frogs.
Ahh you learn something new every day.
PS for those of you that new my wife was pregnant and for those of you that didnt. We had a 7lb 2oz baby girl by C section yesterday morning (2 weeks early) Shannon Lucy Robson She was born with a full head of hair! I am jealous!
I dont know why this post made me think of giving birth but there you go.
Cheers
