Sorry, no pics of this pair of birds that we saw through the window in the school playground today. They were black and white, thought they were a pair of plumpish magpies to begin with, but when they turned round they had very long bright orange bills, (like a wading bird) and orange legs too.
They were surrounded by the usual array of crows and scavenging seagulls that crowd the playground after the kids have gone back into class. We're 5 miles north east of the centre of Glasgow and about half a mile from the forth and clyde canal, but have never seen any birds like these before. They stood out enough from the rest to be noticed by the kids in class. Any ideas please, in case they come back?

We get Oyster Catchers in my work the whole time. They make a right racket when flying about at night. It looks as though they like feeding on the worms or something that is in the wet earth?

Yes, that's it! There were just the two of them, but the playing fields are totally waterlogged just now and the paths in the playground are full of worms that have come to the surface after all the heavy rain.
Where would they usually hang out?

I've spent a lot of time on the Isle of Arran, the bay at Lochranza is where
I've seen the most numbers (more than I could count).

They were back in the playground again yesterday, just the one pair. I pointed them out to the janitor, who said that there is one pair who have arrived at this time for the past two or three years. He thinks they must come here to mate, judging by the courtship dances he has watched through his window. They then disappear until the following year! Strange to see them in a suburbian area such as this.
