Near the end of my Carlops to Saughton walk today I spotted two wee birds on the WoL.
They were small but plump, completely black with a bright white breast. They where obviously hunting as they where swooping in and out of the water, and perching on rocks.

There is a picture here, the bird is sat on the rock I the middle of the picture.

So as usual what is it?

They are Dippers, they walk under the oncoming flow of water picking off acquatic insects.

A good guide to a healthy stream.

Dippers active on the WOL would always be good news: they can only make a living if the water is clean and able to support a good population of the aquatic invertebrates which is their main food source. They also seem to prefer spots where the river is shallow (ish) and fast-flowing.

I will put this down to a good sighting, and report it to the conservation trust. It was indeed a shallow fast flowing part of the river that I seen them on.

I'm pleased that I reported it, as there are a few Dipper territories along the river, but they don't know exactly where. So getting a sighting of a pair is good.
