|
|
I like using the Windows XP wizard for opening up my camera and loading my photo's onto the computer.
Recently though when I have connected the camera up, it has said it hasn't found the camera and then when I disconnect the camera the computer restarts itself. I have sent the auto error report to Microsoft, but their autobot doesn't know what it is and says to keep sending them.
This is frustrating as I am having to use my daughters computer to download the pictures. So two questions, has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know how I can fix it?
(I have also tried a restore but it's not recocgnising any of the previous restore points) _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

Are you using AOL? (Runs away as fast as possible...)
In answer to your question - no, but it sounds like a problem has arisen if it's doing it now where it wasn't a problem before. I mean, it's not like you just bought a new piece of kit and it isn't working from the outset, eh?
Is the PC totally up to date? All updates from microsoft downloaded and installed? If that's done, has the hard disc been defragmented recently? Has it been searched for mal/spyware?
Contact me if any probs. My name is Highland Nick... _________________ Anyone for a Hot Cross bun and a Creme Egg? |

I know this isn't exactly the answer to your problem but I bought myself a multicard reader from Ebay at the princely sum of 99p+£6.00 postage(I think the guy was just trying to drum up business, and I was the only one who bid, it was my first Ebay purchase and I didn't think I would win), you just plug it into the USB slot and drag the pics to a folder saves a lot of bother and is quite quick, the xp file tranfer window opens but I just cancel that.
Might be a thought for the future as the one I got reads 33 types of cards (so fairly future proof) |

I removed AOL from the computer, and I am now worried that may have been the cause. I think I should have just left it on there?
Running an update now, and it finished before I got to the end of typing this. I am already fully up to date.
I can't remember if I defragged and then used the programme afterwards or not? Should I defrag it again?
I have done a norton scan, is that enough?
Bob, thanks for your suggestion. I don't want to buy a reader when I can just plug the camera into the usb and it does everything I need automatically. But it is an option as I don't want to re-boot my whole computer for one wee programme to work. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

You're welcome Dave.
I would defrag again, can't do any harm. |

Do you have a Lexmark printer or Realplayer 10?

I have a deskjet 810, which works perfectly and has done for several years! It's my camera that doesn't load. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

I gather its the camera. There's a fair few issues with autoplay in XP and some stem from a new release of software for Lexmark printers and also from Realplayer 10. The software for these often updates itself behind the scenes as it were and these changes are known causes of failure to recognise cameras.

As its an Autoplay issue try Microsoft's fixing tool here.

I've been in a similar predicament before and its most likely that the camera driver is corrupt. Removing it is not too bad and here is a link to the Microsoft support site to enable you to run the device manger but allowing you to see disconnected devices.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/EN-US/
Once you do this you will be able to see every bit of kit that has ever been plugged into the USB ports. After you have the device manager running locate the camera and then right click and choose uninstall. (Note: you will probably find the camera under disk drives)
Once done, get the origonal disk out and reinstall the camera from scratch.
Also before removing it, are you making sure you do a software disconnect before unplugging it? (via the usb connection icon in the system tray) [don't want to be accused of sucking eggs here but thought I had better just make sure] _________________ www.BigWolf.co.uk |

Dave, I tried your link but I'm afraid it didn't work. My apologies, I should have realised that you where thinking along the lines of another programme corrupting the camera wizard, when you asked about the printer or realplayer.
Angus, I was a bit unsure what to do about your advice as I have never loaded the camera details onto my computer. However I followed the guide and uninstalled the camera from the device manager. I then plugged it back in and it worked a treat.
For some reason the software disconnect doesn't show for my camera, all it has on there when my camera is plugged in is the modem. It does show a usb memory stick when I am using one, and I then use it to remove it safely, but for the camera it appears to just unplug!!
Thank you to everyone for their advice, despite only the last part being of use, it's the fact that so many people came up with ideas. _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you

Glad to hear that its now working again.
It may be that the camera is designed to be pulled straight out but you may want to make sure that its not seen by running the following via Start / run which will manually run the unplug/eject screen.
%windir%\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
This screen will display all the hot pluggable items and its probably best to run it before you add the camera to see what should be there. Then plug in the camera, as normal, and see if it is detected (probably as a storage device) if it is, then its best to use the 'stop' facility before pulling it out. _________________ www.BigWolf.co.uk |

Thanks Angus,
I have done that and it is not on the list and was not detected when I plugged the camera in, so I think I can presume it can be unplugged straight away? _________________ Let me know if I say anything that offends you
