Just wondered the other day why we always see the longitude part of a co-ordinate written as W003 rather than W3 or W03? After all the latitude part is usually written as N56 rather than N056. I guess there is a reason for this but does anyone know what it is? _________________ www.BigWolf.co.uk |

From Greenwich, you can go 180 degrees east or west until you you start to go back again on the opposite side of the world. Greenwich being the start of the longitude measurement.
Now latitude starts at the equator and goes "up" or "down" 90 degrees until you get to the N or S pole and start to go back using the same numbers.
So you need 3 digits for longitude 000 - 180 but only 2 for latitude 00 - 90. |
