Can anyone help. I am trying to create waypoints in trip and waypoint manager. I am OK with the lat/long format, but cannot seem to set it to 4 or 6 figure national grid references. The nearest I can get is a format that displays as the 2 grid letters and then 2 sets of 5 digits e.g. NY 54321 12345 etc

That's the only OS grid format available on Garmin units and software - and the extra digits aren't optional.
So the "classic" version (six-figure) of your example has to be...
NY 54300 12300
...etc.
