I suspect that it, or less likely its predecessors, has escaped from a local caged private collection.

In captivity, and to a lesser extent in the wild , pheasants are not particularly good at sitting on, and hatching out their own eggs, and for this reason many captive pheasant eggs are hatched in incubators or under chickens.
Having said this, I have a friend who keeps a few specialist pheasant varieties and last year he had a pair of Golden pheasants hatch two young pheasants from eggs, which they had laid and 'clocked' themselves.

A Golden pheasant cock bird in spring and summer is a spectacular site and must be one of the most vivid colourings found on any bird! Well worth a sighting if you have the opportunity to view one.

I really suck at bird identification Smile I had to post the Picture of the Buzzard to make sure it was a Buzzard Smile

Maybe its time to do some research on different bird species. Can anybody point me to a good website or book ?

The RSPB is good and quick if you think you know what your bird might be, but since the bird pages are on an alphabetical index it doesn't help if you see a Coot and think its a Moorhen.

I like the RSPB Handbook of British Birds which is good and clear. I identified a Reed Bunting in the garden thanks to it. Looked like a sparrow with a balaclava! Readthemanual
