Has anyone had a look at Www.Opencaching.com ? It is a rival to gc.com. I had a quick look and it has a nice interface and you can rate caches for their "awesomeness". The closest cache to Edinburgh is in Carlisle at the time of writing.

I understand there are other listing sites as well. Do you think you'll use it or will you just stick with gc.com?

From what I have seen on the main forums, is that opencaching and Terracaching don't particularly care about upsetting landowners, as far as you don't need to seek permission. If and when these caches are found by landowners the landowner finds what they perceive to be a 'geo'cache which doesn't do the pastime of geocaching any good.

So I prefer to stick with GC.com, it is after all the best listing site, despite the few things that they won't implement such as rating caches.

I have just seen on the main forum that this is a completely different site to opencaching.org.uk

I'll still stick with GC.com

74 caches in the whole of the UK. I guess you have to start somewhere!

However, it is pretty!

But how many of those are new as opposed to dual listed?

One thing to note is that its operated by Garmin but best of all there is an open and fully documented programing interface so that you wont have to rely on PQ's etc . The latest Beta version of GSAK can now query thier database directly via the macro language.

Clearly its got a long way to go but it may well give gc.com a run for their money.

using Bing for it mapping you'd think this would be the perfect platform to use the OS maps available on Bing. I guess there may be a conflict of mapping there tho!

Being based on the other side of the big pond I suspect that they have chosen Bing as it covers most of the world without having to make any changes to the default map selection. I guess they will add localised i.e. OS maps as the default as times goes on though.

so, if a cache is listed on GC.com, is it considered good conduct to then go back and log all your previous finds if they appear on another listing site?

In this instance you don't have to, as you can import all of your finds across even if the cache isn't listed yet.

I'm pretty sure that is just a way to get you to change allegiance without losing your number count. A pretty smart idea, but is it legal? For all of your find data is produced by Groundspeak.
