I wonder if this thread might be worth 'sticking'.

I recently got permission from the Scottish Wildlife Trust to place a cache in one of their nature reserves. The chap seemed to know about geocaching. I have contact details for the Reserves manager for East Central if anyone else needs them.

There is information about other links to bodies for permission on other UK forums but I thought it might be useful to have the Scottish relevant ones listed here.

Thanks for starting this thread Sally. The GAGB are going to post permission agreements that are relevant to each of the regional forums.
There's a few that apply to Scotland, which I'll post shortly.

Thanks.

Edit: I would be grateful if members could inform me of any errors, or amendments that effect the details of the permission agreements below.

CairnGorm Mountain

Landowner
CairnGorm Mountain Ltd

Nic Bullivant,
Head Ranger,
Cairngorm Ranger Service.
01479 861703
ranger@cairngormmountain.com

Geocacher contact,
GAGB Committee.

Description,
Former UK geocaching.com reviewer Eckington was contacted by a staff member of CairnGorm Mountain Ltd about the placing of caches on their land.

They are very happy to welcome cachers to place a cache on the land they own in the Cairngorm area providing the cache owner works in liaison with them to prevent any likelihood of damage to ecologically sensitive sites, and follows the usual geocaching.com guidelines.

Should any cacher wish to place a cache in this area please make contact with the Cairngorm Ranger Service. Their Head Ranger, Nic Bullivant, will then consider the request.

He can be contacted on 01479 861703 or ranger@cairngormmountain.com

Please indicate on any cache submission, by way of a note to the reviewer, that you have been in contact and permission has been granted. The reviewers and GAGB have a map of the boundaries of the Cairngorm Estate.

Many thanks to all at CairnGorm Ltd who have made this possible.

FC Central Scotland

Landowner
Rena Tarvinska, District Forester in charge of Recreation for the FC Scottish Lowlands region.

e-mail: TBC

Geocacher contact
Allieballie

Description
Due to Allieballie's efforts, Rena Tarvinska who is District Forester in charge of Recreation for the FC Scottish Lowlands region (ranges from Glasgow to Livingston, up to Carron Valley, Kilsyth, Denny and east over to Kelty) has agreed to allowing geocaching in her area. Not unreasonably she would prefer them to be placed close to marked trails so that geocachers aren't being taken deep into the woods.

She seemed very keen on having geocachers come to their forests - also said that they monitor the gc.com site sometimes to see how popular the caches within their woods are!

She would also quite like it if we give her a note of the Grid Ref. of the cache though.

This can be done directly to the contact address above or via the reviewers. Please indicate in a reviewer note if you have contacted her directly when submitting new caches for review.

I have taken advice from Scottish Lowlands FD and we are happy for you to go ahead, no permissions required as long as you do not bury anything, that way you will not damage scheduled monuments etc. Access by motor vehicle or motor bike is not allowed on FCS ground without a permission.

Whether Navicaching, Terracaching or Geocaching the most important aspect of cache placement should be one of common sense and following the very sound guidelines that have been published on this.

It is my belief that when someone places a cache that they seek appropriate permission for doing so, I also believe that in most cases, in Scotland - it is not necessary - unless of course it is to be published on gc.com - it is part of their terms of use that permission is required.

In any event, caches should be placed by people who are familiar with the area and will be knowledgable about local conditions. They are also likely to know the local game keepers and land managers. However, boundaries can sometimes be a difficult thing to determine - for instance - Cairngorm Mountain Ltd have been under the misapprehension of owning land that they do not Laughing

A very useful tool for determining ownership in many areas of Scotland is http://www.whoownsscotland.org.uk/page_cache/search_engine.htm

There are still large areas for which there is no mapping data, and indeed details of ownership, but it is a good starting point if you do not know who the landowner is.

Additional resources for information on Land Ownership/management are

Church of Scotland General Trustees
(www.churchofscotland.org.uk)
The Crown Estate (www.thecrownestate.co.uk)
Forestry Commission (www.forestry.gov.uk)
John Muir Trust (www.jmt.org)
Ministry of Defence (www.mod.uk)
The National Trust for Scotland (www.nts.org.uk)
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (www.rspb.org.uk)
Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department;
Scottish Ministers Crofting Estates (www.scotland.gov.uk)
Scottish Rural Property and Business Association
(www.srpba.com)
Scottish Natural Heritage (www.snh.org.uk)
Scottish Wildlife Trust (www.swt.org.uk)

In my opinion - if you really feel that your proposed cache site requires/warrants the landowners permission - it probably isn't the best place to be putting it ! Unless of course you are having to comply with gc.com TOU

I hope you come back and keep us updated, it will be interesting to see how many agencies are prepared to agree to cache placements - and perhaps you will keep us updated on the refusals as well.

Whilst I have no problem contacting you through gc.com or geo-x forum, and I can appreciate that this would be much more convenient on an administration level - but addressing CSFT is kind of formal in this day and age - your contact telephone number would put you as Abigail Page - could we not address you as such ?

I've just posted about this on GAGB, but thought it worthwhile posting here too. I'm about to approach the FC Inverness people for permission for a cache on their land near Feshiebridge. Anyone have any previous contact or in active discussion with them?
