|
|
There were no caches to be found in Les Trois Vallees, but I found a new use for my lovely new Vista C. Hanging it around my neck while skiing, I recorded our tracks (which are now downloaded onto my computer) and I found that it gave me all kinds of geeky information, the most interesting of which was my top speed (42.3 mph). I couldn't use it on our longest day out though, as the very low temperature (minus 20 degrees at the mountain summit) put paid to the batteries.
There was an advert in our chalet to hire a Satski - which presumably does pretty much the same job. _________________ Utterly smitten by a Captain

Yep. That seems to be pretty much what it is: a Tom-Tom for the slopes - with an MP3 player thrown in.
Here it is. _________________ In the service of a Queen |

I've never been skiing. Is 42.3 mph really slow or really fast?
I asked my brother (who has been on the slopes) but he said that he just fell over a lot and it didn't seem to matter what speed he was doing.

That looks really cool. I think I may have to steer Jack past the gadget shops from now on..... _________________ Utterly smitten by a Captain

It felt pretty fast at the time...but compared to downhill racers I expect it's snails pace. _________________ Utterly smitten by a Captain

It's pretty fast for a holiday skier.
But if you want REALLY fast.....the top performers in Alpine downhill races get up to around 90 mph. Then there are extreme speed skiers who just go straight downhill on extra long skis wearing streamlined helmets and special aerodynamic trousers (no, honestly). The current world record is close to 160 mph..... _________________ In the service of a Queen |

I used to be a regular on the slopes (no for a while though).
42.3mph seems fast to me _________________ I am just going outside, and may be some time!

Managed to top this speed this year. My GPSr tells me that the fastest speed today was 67.1 mph. Hard to believe, and I imagine it was only for a very short stretch!
Looking forward to downloading the track log onto googlearth. Today's trek was around 42 miles across 5 valleys. The difference between the highest and lowest altitudes we did (in one day with lots of lifts and runs up and down) was 2 km vertically. It'a amazing what ground you can cover on a pair of skis!
